As many of you are aware before Covid we were planning an extension to our Club.

The impact of the pandemic meant that we needed to use our reserves just to survive and now need to raise additional funds to complete the project.

We have secured the addition land that was needed and we will be starting with phase 1 of the project which is going onto mains drainage in November 2021. We will confirm the start date as soon as possible.

For those of you who are not aware of what we are trying to achieve I have included some information.

Project

The funding is to go towards the cost of building a new gymnasium which will be 40 metres by 9.5 metres, a sensory room which will have emphasis on providing additional and bespoke facilities for children with disabilities. The sensory room will be a stimulating environment aimed at developing hand-eye coordination as well as relaxation, focused work, stimulation, control, and communication, which will strengthen personal, social and emotional development of the participants. The Club is designated an “I’m in” disability facility by British Gymnastics and is looking to expand provision for the benefit of the community. It will also allow us to enlarge the reception area to be more accessible for all.

The overriding need is to provide more capacity for the development of our disability programme and enhance the existing classes for both general gymnastics and Squads.

The new gymnasium would allow for some of our existing equipment to be moved to allow competition standard run ups, it will create more space in our exiting 3 gymnasiums allowing us to increase participation, reduce the waiting lists and benefit the local community.

We are at full capacity at the moment with waiting lists of 120 for general gymnastics. By expanding the facility we would be able to increase the numbers taking part in gymnastics. Our disability gymnastics is very popular and having seen the benefits to the children already taking part we would like to be able to offer classes to more participants. We also have a list of 8-10 schools that would be interested in bring classes to the gym from the Surrey Para Games event that we ran gymnastics classes at in 2017.

Why we need to expand

Disability Gymnastics – We have a disability entrance for the schools and adult classes to come in however the team gym run up needs to be moved every class to allow wheelchair access. The new extension would allow the tumble track to be moved to allow better access. By moving other equipment in the existing gyms we will have more space for disability classes. The sensory room will allow those with more severe disabilities to attend and can be used by charities/groups who do not have access to a sensory room.

Team Gym – At present the run up tumble track for team gym is 22 metres the new extension would allow 30 metres which is competition standard. The trampette/vault run up is 18 metres and runs across the floor in gym 1. This means the full floor cannot be used when Team Gym are using this and the older gymnasts have to start their run up from reception area. By moving the trampette/vault to the new extension the full floor can be used for other disciplines and the run up would be completion standard of 25 metres. It would also allow for a fixed landing at present we only have landing to pit.

Men’s/Women’s Artistic – Currently there is no landing to vault. The extension will have an artistic vault with competition standard landing to help prepare gymnasts for competition. By moving the tumble track in gym 3 we will be able to fit a new competition standard floor to gym 3. Presently there is no enough room for the new regulation floor.

General Gymnastics for All – Currently it is difficult for general classes without full use of the floor. By moving the previously mentioned equipment we would have more space allowing us to increase class sizes and reduce our waiting lists. By having two floors there would be more opportunity for general gymnasts to enter floor and vault competitions.

Reception Area – Access to the building for parents dropping off and collecting gymnasts will be much easier with the extension to the reception area.

Without the extension we are unable to expand classes and therefore we could not encourage more children to be active.

We will be putting together an information section on our website so that you can see the plans.

We have applied for funding through Your Fund Surrey and we need your help. We have already secured funding from The Peter Harrison Foundation, London Marathon Trust and Sport England but we need more to complete the project.

As part of the application to your Fund Surrey we need you to comment on how the project will help the community that we serve.

Please can you click on this link and comment on why you feel this would benefit the community and club. Please remember to slide the bar to positive.
